Text tackled into two parts. In the first part, ‘conceptual approaches to the landscape as a palimpsest of actions on territory’ was explained. In the second part, the author gave three examples related to educational and professional case studies. Questioning and sampling method was used by Karamanea in this paper.
The main target of the essay is that explains the significance of the relationship between landscape, human action and natural environment. So, text address to a specific audience like architects, interior architects and landscape designers.
Karamanea said that: ‘’The interaction between human behavior and the natural characteristics of a site create a landscape, which is understood in this context as the cultural expression of a civilization’’ (Karamanea,2017 pp.115).
The author states that “Without people connected to them, landscapes are no longer living places” (Karamanea,2017 pp.116). According to my interpretation, people give meaning to places. Without people, there are no differences between spaces. Because the things which create landscapes are feelings and they are necessary to describe. In addition, this idea can be connected with ‘’ Genius loci’’. ‘’Genius loci, or the spirit of the place, is that quality or characteristic which makes one location or landscape different from any other, and that is unique and individual to it’’ (Simon Bell, 1993 cited in Karamanea,2017 pp.115). A landscape that does landscape is feelings that feel us.

‘’Landscape is the result of tension and equilibrium, it is dynamism, capable of transmitting emotion that goes beyond the visual’’ (Manuel de Solà-Morales cited in in Karamanea,2017 pp.130). Landscapes have different places the mind of every people. This situation changes from culture to culture, from age to age, from gender to gender. Sometimes while space which is based in the city make a sense for all the people, one the other hand, some spaces make a sense for individuals. As an example, from my city, Hadrianus Gate is one of the most important historical places which were placed the center of in my city. The people who live in Antalya often can see this place. While some people still remember old days, others just go by. Also, there are many tourists come at any time of the year. This place makes feel different to the visitors compared to citizens.

Additionally, the examples which show, collective memory and genius loci affect projects in an inventive way. ‘’A series of intangible concepts, such as
collective memory and genius loci, as well as a series of tangible characteristics
like topography, movement and plantation were addressed to varying degrees’’ (Karamanea,2017 pp.130). Tangible and abstract concepts should be evaluated simultaneously.
Questions:
1. Does every landscape have genius loci?
2. Should designers create a new ID for the places which do not have past?
